Knoxville rolled out of bed Sunday, June 14, into thick fog, muggy air and temperatures hovering around 68°F, with humidity close to the saturation point. The soupy start is likely to slow parts of the morning commute before showers and thunderstorms muscle in later today.
Showers and Strong Gusts Possible This Afternoon
Rain showers are expected between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday, June 14, with showers and thunderstorms ramping up into the afternoon. The high should reach near 87°F before slipping into the mid-80s later in the day. Southwest winds of 5 to 15 mph are expected, with gusts up to 25 mph. A few storms could turn strong to severe, with damaging wind as the main concern, and new rainfall amounts of a quarter to a half inch are likely, according to the National Weather Service.
Foggy Morning, Slick Commutes
Drivers should expect reduced visibility through mid-morning and slick roads where downpours move through, so it is wise to leave extra time for commutes and errands. Outdoor plans, including afternoon youth sports and patio meetups, should have a backup option. Storms can build quickly and may bring brief heavy rain and gusty winds.
Cooler, Drier Start to the Week
Monday and Tuesday are forecast to turn cooler and drier, with highs near 80°F and mostly sunny skies. Rain chances then increase again by Thursday and Friday, with higher odds around Juneteenth, per the NWS. We will monitor the situation and post updates if watches or warnings are issued.
We flagged this threat in our Sunday storm threat coverage, and this morning's fog plus the latest National Weather Service update has sharpened timing for many neighborhoods.
