A 35-year-old man was struck and killed by an M train at the Forest Avenue subway station in Ridgewood on Tuesday afternoon, police said, turning an otherwise routine commute into a grim scene. Emergency crews cut power to the tracks so they could remove the body, briefly shutting down service along the Myrtle Avenue stretch of the line. Detectives said there were no immediate signs of criminality as the investigation moves forward.
Fire officials said they received a 911 call about a person struck by a train at around 2:10 p.m. Officers from the 104th Precinct and transit units arrived to find the man beneath a train in grave condition. EMS crews pronounced him dead at the scene. According to a law-enforcement source, investigators were told that the train operator reported seeing the man jump from the platform in front of the train. Emergency responders requested power be shut off to allow them to safely reach and remove the body from the tracks. These on-scene details were reported by QNS.
Where It Happened
The Forest Avenue stop sits on the elevated BMT Myrtle Avenue line at Forest Avenue and Putnam Avenue in Ridgewood and is served by the M train at all times. It is an island-platform local station used by neighborhood commuters and connecting bus riders. Station details and location are available on Wikipedia.
Service Impact
The MTA temporarily suspended service between Myrtle Avenue and Metropolitan Avenue while crews worked at the scene. A transit spokesman said service later resumed with residual delays in both directions. The pause also caused follow-on delays for riders transferring at nearby stations and for local bus connections. The transit spokesman's comments were reported by QNS.
What Comes Next
The NYPD Transit Bureau and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are handling the investigation and will determine the cause of death. Detectives say the case remains under review and that, so far, there is no indication of criminality. Hoodline will update this post if officials release further information.
