A 31-year-old Fosston man died after he was shot inside an apartment on Monday, according to local authorities, as reported by FOX 9 Minneapolis. Police say officers were called around 3:20 p.m. for a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 300 block of Mark Avenue. Inside one of the units, they found both the victim and a suspect. The victim was flown to Essentia Health in Fargo and died the following morning.
The Fosston Police Department identified the victim as 31-year-old TeeJay Alvarez. Officers found a 22-year-old man inside the apartment and took him into custody without incident. Police say he is being held on probable-cause second-degree assault and discharge of a firearm while formal charges remain pending, according to FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Local reporting identified the suspect as 22-year-old Cory Burnette Jr. and said he was booked at the Northwest Regional Correctional Center in Crookston on probable-cause second-degree assault and intentional discharge of a firearm. The Cass County (N.D.) coroner's office confirmed Alvarez died at Essentia Health-Fargo, according to KFGO.
Scene And Investigation
Police say the initial 911 call reported a disturbance that may have involved a gun. Investigators determined Alvarez was shot inside one of the units and was first taken by a private party to Essentia Health-Fosston before being flown to Fargo. The Fosston Police Department is being assisted by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota State Patrol, according to KVRR.
Legal Status And Next Steps
Police say the investigation remains active and that more information will be released in a formal criminal complaint. The Minnesota Star Tribune reports that jail records indicate the 22-year-old was booked and later released with charges pending, a detail officials have not publicly confirmed as of this writing, per the Star Tribune.
Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the Fosston Police Department. Investigators say they are continuing to interview witnesses and review evidence.
