An 18-year-old from Franklin is behind bars in St. Mary Parish after deputies say a cyber tip led them to evidence of child sexual abuse material being shared from a home on Circle Drive. Investigators say the case moved quickly once that tip came in, ending with a Thursday, June 25 search that deputies report turned up digital evidence tied to the alleged distribution. The suspect, identified as Benjamin Joseph Bertrand of Franklin, was taken into custody and processed at the parish law enforcement center.
Arrest report and timeline
According to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office, Bertrand was arrested June 25 at 12:24 p.m. on a warrant for distribution of child sexual abuse material. The sheriff's daily arrest report lists the 18-year-old Franklin resident among several people booked in the same 24-hour period. The online entry was posted by Public Information Officer Lt. David Spencer.
Search, evidence and booking
WBRZ reports that the investigation began with a cybercrime tip on June 5. Deputies then executed a search warrant at a Circle Drive residence last Thursday, where they seized digital files that investigators say were linked to the alleged distribution of abuse material.
The station also reports Bertrand was booked into the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center and, according to that coverage, was being held on a $75,000 bond.
Broader enforcement trend
Local officials say cases involving online child exploitation have been ticking up across southeast Louisiana in recent months, often relying on cooperation between agencies and digital forensics work.
In May, for instance, a separate investigation resulted in child sexual abuse material related charges against a Terrebonne Parish man, reflecting similar enforcement efforts in neighboring communities. That case was covered by WAFB.
What the law says
Louisiana statute La. R.S. 14:81.1, updated in recent legislation to explicitly use the term “child sexual abuse materials,” makes it a felony to produce, promote, distribute or possess such material. The law outlines potential prison terms, fines and reporting requirements for those convicted under the statute. Details of the statute and penalties are available on the Louisiana Legislature site.
Where the case stands
Bertrand remains in custody and the investigation is ongoing. Prosecutors have not yet released charging documents beyond what is contained in the arrest report.
Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office at 337-828-1960. The sheriff's office says additional details will be made public as the case moves through the court system.
