A late-night argument inside a Fuller Park home ended with a 39-year-old man shot in the face and rushed to the hospital in critical condition Thursday, according to Chicago police.

What Police Reported

Police said the violence unfolded around 9:35 p.m. inside a residence in the 5300 block of South Shields Avenue, where two men began arguing and things quickly spiraled. The confrontation started as a verbal dispute, then turned into a physical fight before one of the men pulled out a gun.

During the struggle, the gunman fired, hitting the 39-year-old in the face, Chicago Sun-Times reported. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Fuller Park's Long Struggle With Violence

Fuller Park is one of Chicago’s smallest community areas, but its problems are outsized. Years of disinvestment and entrenched structural challenges have helped fuel persistent violence in the neighborhood, according to a profile of the area.

WTTW reported in 2015 that those longstanding issues are tied to higher per-capita rates of violent crime than many larger community areas across the city.

Investigation

Police said no one was in custody and detectives were investigating, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Authorities asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact police. For emergencies, residents are urged to call 911.
