Gary is turning the U.S. Steel Yard, home of the RailCats, into an all-out R&B and soul party this Saturday, as the city rolls out the Greater Gary Music Fest, a free, daylong show running from noon to 8 p.m. National names share the bill with hometown talent, with Deniece Williams, Eric Roberson and Raheem DeVaughn among the headliners, and comedian Mike Epps handling hosting duties.

According to the City of Gary, admission to the Greater Gary Music Fest is free with a ticket and the festival runs from noon to 8 p.m. The city also lists VIP suite packages and sponsors including Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, Centier Bank and Northern Indiana Public Service Company.

Lineup and hosts

Deniece Williams, Eric Roberson and Raheem DeVaughn top the lineup alongside local artists and DJs, with Mike Epps steering the crowd between sets. Roberson told the Chicago Tribune he was “grateful to play a small part in the city’s revitalization work,” a hint that this is meant to be more than just a casual summer hang.

Tickets, parking and food

General admission tickets are free, but once you are inside you will still need your wallet. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, and parking is paid. As noted by South Shore CVA, lot fees are about $20 and tap-or-card payment will be required. VIP suite buyers were promised dedicated parking passes and private hospitality as part of their purchased packages.

City leaders’ pitch

Mayor Eddie Melton has framed the festival as part of a broader summer push to boost community engagement and placemaking, and he told the Chicago Tribune that response has been extremely positive. The Tribune also reports Melton said no tax dollars were used to fund the event and that corporate sponsors and suite sales helped cover costs.

Tickets remain free but are required for entry, and organizers recommend arriving early, bringing a card for parking and checking the festival’s entry policy before you go. For tickets and full event details, head to the City of Gary.
