Big Dog Ranch Rescue says it is grieving Omelette, a former laboratory beagle who slipped away from a newly adopted South Florida home and was later discovered dead in a nearby canal. The organization believes the dog most likely fell victim to an alligator and has responded by tightening safety rules in its adoption program.
How the search unfolded
The rescue says Omelette squeezed through a fence on Sunday evening. Staff were alerted around 6 p.m., and volunteers quickly pushed alerts across social media, Nextdoor and missing-pet platforms while teams combed the neighborhood, according to MyFox28 Columbus. After two days of searching, Omelette was found Tuesday morning in a nearby canal.
The rescue's reaction
“Our entire team is devastated,” Big Dog Ranch Rescue said in a statement, adding that “this is not the outcome we prayed for, or the ending Omelette deserved.” The group also said the adopter had been given a Fi GPS tracking collar but had not activated it before the escape, a detail the organization said highlighted safety gaps it plans to address, MyFox28 Columbus reported.
New safety measures
In response, the rescue announced it will not release any dog until staff confirm a Fi GPS collar is installed, activated and working properly. The organization said the policy takes effect immediately and urged adopters of the Ridglan beagles to double-check their trackers and app settings, according to CBS12.
Where this fits in the beagle rescue
The loss comes as Big Dog Ranch Rescue takes part in a nationwide effort to rehome roughly 1,500 beagles removed from a Wisconsin breeding facility, a large-scale transfer covered by national outlets including the AP. Local reporting also notes that the rescue recently helped secure the release of another 135 beagles, who are now being processed for medical care and adoption, per WPBF.
What adopters should know
Big Dog Ranch Rescue is urging adopters to set up and activate any GPS collars as soon as they bring a dog home and to keep the devices on at all times. Staff say they will verify tracker activation before a dog leaves for a new home, according to CBS12. The organization also said it will review post-adoption support and safety protocols to lower the chances of a similar tragedy.
The loss of Omelette has shaken staff and volunteers even as Big Dog Ranch Rescue continues to process and place the incoming Ridglan beagles. Officials say the episode has reinforced the rescue’s focus on practical steps, from GPS collars to checklists, to help keep newly adopted dogs safe in their first weeks at home.
