A late-night crash at a rural Sheboygan County intersection turned deadly Sunday when a sedan reportedly ran a stop sign and was hit by a semi on State Highway 23 in the Town of Greenbush. The impact overturned the semi, killed the car’s driver at the scene and sent three other people to the hospital, shutting down the highway for hours while crews worked in the dark. Authorities say they are still notifying families and have not yet released the names of anyone involved.
What investigators say
According to WBAY, the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office says the crash was reported shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday. Investigators say a sedan traveling on Scenic View Drive failed to stop at a stop sign and moved into the path of an eastbound semi on Highway 23. The semi tipped over in the collision, and deputies pronounced the sedan’s driver dead at the scene. The sheriff’s office has not yet released any identifying information as the investigation continues.
Scene and response
Multiple local fire departments, first responders and at least one medical helicopter were sent to the intersection, and the sedan involved was identified as a Toyota Corolla, according to TMJ4. That report notes that three people who had been inside the semi were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Road closure and cleanup
The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office said the intersection was shut down for hours while investigators documented the scene and crews worked to clear debris and right the overturned semi. The stretch of road reopened at about 8:30 a.m. Monday, according to WBAY. The outlet also reports that agencies assisting at the scene included the Greenbush and Plymouth fire departments, Plymouth police, first responders from Elkhart Lake and Glenbeulah, and ambulance crews from Orange Cross and Kiel.
Why this stretch matters
State Highway 23 has been under the microscope for years in east-central Wisconsin, as officials weigh safety and capacity upgrades along the corridor. Transportation studies have recommended additional lanes and other improvements on various portions of the highway to better handle traffic volumes and access points. Environmental review and planning documents flag ongoing safety and capacity concerns on stretches that run near Greenbush, according to the WisDOT.
Investigation ongoing
Dispatch records show crews were sent to the intersection of Scenic View Drive and State Highway 23 at about 9:53 p.m., and the crash remains under active investigation, according to NBC26. Authorities have not yet shared additional details about the driver of the sedan or a more detailed sequence of events leading up to the collision.
