What started as a chaotic fight on Boone Avenue in Brooklyn Park ended with four people in handcuffs and a handgun off the street, according to police.
Brooklyn Park officers were called Monday evening to the 6300 block of Boone Avenue North for a report of a fight involving a group of people. Witnesses told police a woman in the crowd was waving a handgun. Officers later recovered a firearm that matched what witnesses described. Detectives are still interviewing witnesses and processing evidence, and the department says the case remains under active investigation.
In a Facebook update from the Brooklyn Park Police Department, officials said the initial call described an altercation involving about eight to ten people. A group believed to be tied to the gun took off on foot before officers arrived, according to the post. Police tracked the group to a nearby apartment, took four suspects into custody, and booked them on assault-related charges. A handgun consistent with witness accounts was recovered, and detectives are still sorting through conflicting statements and physical evidence.
Arrests Follow A String Of Gun Calls
The Boone Avenue arrests come on the heels of a busy stretch of gun-related calls in the northwest suburbs. On May 24, a shootout at Oak Grove Park left investigators collecting more than 70 spent shell casings and ultimately led to multiple felony charges, according to FOX 9. In recent weeks, local reporters have also documented several other shots-fired calls and follow-up search warrants in Brooklyn Park, according to CCX Media.
Legal Notes
The four people taken into custody were booked on assault-related counts. Any additional firearms-related charges or sentence enhancements will be up to prosecutors after investigators finish reviewing the evidence. Minnesota law treats the use or threatened use of a "dangerous weapon" as a serious offense. Under Minnesota Statute §609.222, assault with a dangerous weapon can be charged as a felony punishable by up to seven years in prison, and up to ten years if the assault causes substantial bodily harm. The Brooklyn Park Police Department’s Facebook post confirmed the bookings but did not release names or further details about the suspects or any potential victims.
Police say the investigation is still active and more information will be released as follow-up work is completed. Officials have not yet provided the names of those arrested or clarified whether anyone suffered serious injuries.
