Gunfire shattered a repass on Detroit’s east side Saturday afternoon, leaving two men wounded after a drive-by shooting disrupted what was supposed to be a solemn gathering, police said.
The shooting unfolded around 5 p.m. in the 12500 block of Payton, where mourners had gathered following a funeral. Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital. One man was listed in temporary serious condition, while the other was reported to be in stable condition, according to police.
What police say
According to ClickOnDetroit, a vehicle drove past the gathering and opened fire into the crowd. People at the repass returned fire, authorities said, and detectives are now working to figure out who shot first and whether the shots fired back came from bystanders or others at the event.

Detectives are reviewing video and interviewing witnesses in an effort to identify the suspect vehicle and understand the motive. Police are asking anyone who saw suspicious activity or captured footage in the 12500 block of Payton around 5 p.m. Saturday to share it with investigators.
