Gunfire broke the quiet in northwest Oklahoma City on Monday near Northwest 3rd Street and North Virginia Avenue, leaving one person injured, according to police. The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities have not released the victim’s name or any suspect information.
Oklahoma City police responded to the scene and opened an investigation, but officers said it is still unclear what led up to the shooting, according to News 9. Reporter Christian Hans noted that officers blocked off parts of the neighborhood while they collected evidence and that no arrests had been announced at the time of the station’s initial report. Investigators continued working the scene during the outlet’s latest update.
Where it happened
The shooting took place near NW 3rd and N Virginia, next to the Homeless Alliance’s WestTown campus, which operates a low-barrier day shelter and a winter shelter in that corridor, according to the organization’s contact page. The campus brings outreach services and regular foot traffic to the block during daytime hours, a dynamic residents and service providers often point to when talking about public-safety and outreach needs in the area. The Homeless Alliance lists the WestTown campus and its services on its site.
Virginia Avenue has seen other serious incidents
The Virginia Avenue corridor has been the backdrop for other recent violence, including a double homicide near NW 10th Street earlier this year that drew a large police response, according to local television coverage. KOCO reported that officers found two male victims with gunshot wounds on Virginia Avenue, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in parts of northwest Oklahoma City.
Officials say the latest shooting remains under investigation, and they expect to release more details once they are confirmed by detectives. News 9 reports that the case is still considered an active investigation.
