Morning classes were just getting underway on Milwaukee’s North Side on Thursday when gunfire broke out near two schools and a daycare, leaving one person wounded and a neighborhood on edge.
Milwaukee police said the shooting happened just before 8 a.m. in the 2700 block of N. 44th St., a short walk from Washington High School of Information Technology, Milwaukee Math and Science Academy and the Gregory’s Little Helpers child care center. A 31-year-old was taken to a local hospital with unspecified injuries, and police said the suspects were still at large.
Officers arrived shortly after the initial report and began locking down the scene and collecting evidence, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The outlet reported that detectives were still working to piece together what led up to the shooting, and there had been no arrests as of its reporting. Investigators urged anyone with information to come forward.
Schools And Daycare Respond
Despite the nearby gunfire, Washington High School of Information Technology did not go into lockdown. Principal José Frias sent a message to families reassuring them that “the school was safe and classes would continue normally,” according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Milwaukee Math and Science Academy and Gregory’s Little Helpers, both close to the scene, were also looped into the police response as officials coordinated with officers and monitored the situation. Parents and neighbors said they appreciated the quick outreach from school leaders as word of the incident spread.
