An evening at a popular North Seattle playground took a frightening turn Monday when neighbors in the Laurelhurst and Bryant area reported a burst of gunfire near Pathways Park, sending police racing to the scene and rattling a usually quiet pocket of the city.
The call came in just before 9 p.m. Officers arriving at Pathways Park, along Mithun Place NE, found multiple shell casings scattered across the play area, according to FOX 13 Seattle. Neighbors told reporters they heard a rapid series of shots cutting through the evening air. Police said there were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests, and the investigation remained active late into the night as officers secured the playground and canvassed for witnesses.
About Pathways Park
Pathways Park is a recently opened inclusive playground in northeast Seattle, built to welcome children and families of all abilities. The park, which opened in June 2024 near the Burke-Gilman Village, was developed with community input and features accessibility-focused design elements, according to the Seattle Parks Foundation.
For many neighbors, that backdrop made the sound of gunfire near swings and slides feel especially jarring.
Police Request Help From Witnesses
Detectives are now working to piece together what happened and who was involved. Investigators are asking anyone who was in or near the playground around 9 p.m. Monday to share what they saw or recorded. The Seattle Police Department’s violent-crimes tip line at (206) 233-5000 is the best contact for information related to the case, according to FOX 13 Seattle.
Police regularly lean on nearby residents and passersby for cellphone video, doorbell footage, or even small details that might not seem important at first glance. In investigations like this, those details can become key pieces of the puzzle.
How Investigators Typically Proceed
Shooting scenes in Seattle often take hours to process. They are typically assigned to specialized detectives from the Gun Violence Reduction Unit and homicide teams, who collect ballistic evidence, document the scene, and interview witnesses. Recent entries on the Seattle Police blotter describe officers recovering casings, processing scenes, and asking the public to call the violent-crimes tip line after similar incidents. One example is a reported arrest following a Mount Baker shooting, detailed on the Seattle Police blotter.
Neighbors around Pathways Park said they were shaken by the noise and the heavy police response, but reiterated that no injuries had been reported publicly. The investigation remains active, and detectives continue to urge anyone with information to contact the tip line.
