HCA Healthcare’s West Florida expansion of freestanding emergency rooms is hitting a local finish line as the system gets ready to open a Spring Hill facility tied to Oak Hill Hospital. The opening wraps up a nearly $70 million effort to park hospital-level ER care closer to suburban neighborhoods across Tampa Bay.
Business Journals: Final Freestanding ER Lands in Hernando County
Today, The Business Journals reported that HCA’s West Florida division will close out its multi-site expansion with the debut of HCA Florida Oak Hill South Emergency in Spring Hill. The facility is the last of three freestanding ERs the system unveiled last year, following earlier openings elsewhere in the region and completing the chain of sites HCA has been rolling out across Tampa Bay.
Three ERs, One Investment
HCA’s own newsroom framed the program in February 2025 as a nearly $70 million investment aimed at placing freestanding emergency departments in Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus counties. The release named HCA Florida Sunlake Emergency, HCA Florida Oak Hill South Emergency, and HCA Florida Black Diamond Emergency, and said construction would begin in 2025 with completion expected in 2026. “We’re very excited about these investments in the communities we serve to ensure access to needed emergency care,” HCA’s West Florida president said at the time, according to HCA Florida.
Spring Hill Site Specifics
Local reports place the Spring Hill ER on Mariner Boulevard near the Hernando County Family YMCA, with the property identified as 11242 Spring Hill Drive. The project broke ground in June 2025, was pegged at roughly $15.4 million, and is planned for about 12,760 square feet with 11 treatment rooms, according to Florida Construction News.
Preview Event and Timeline
HCA’s calendar lists a family-friendly preview of the Spring Hill ER on June 20, describing the site as set to open later this month. The listing notes that residents can tour the facility, meet ER staff, and view ambulance access and imaging capabilities at the new freestanding center, per HCA Florida’s event page.
Part of a Regional ER Push
The Spring Hill center is one piece of a broader wave of freestanding ERs hospital systems have been planting along Tampa Bay’s fastest-growing corridors. HCA opened Sunlake Emergency in Lutz this spring, and other systems, including BayCare and AdventHealth, have filed plans or launched similar small hospital-grade ERs intended to cut travel times for urgent care, according to local coverage. One outlet has followed how Lutz scores $15 million freestanding ER and related projects are clustering around State Road 54.
Billing and Access Questions
Freestanding ERs can bring faster access to diagnostics and ambulance drop-offs, yet they often come with full emergency-level charges that surprise patients who walk in expecting urgent-care pricing. Watchdog reporting has highlighted cases of unexpected bills at these centers. For a deeper look at how facility names and billing practices can collide, see KFF Health News.
What Residents Should Know
HCA and local leaders say the Spring Hill ER is intended to improve access to stroke and cardiac care by offering 24/7 stabilization and faster transfers to Oak Hill Hospital. “Offering additional emergency services in Hernando County will help support our growing community,” county and hospital officials told local media, according to Hernando Sun. With the preview set for June 20, residents could see the new center begin taking patients before the end of the month.
