One of southeast Louisiana's top economic rainmakers is getting ready to hand off the keys. GNO Inc., the nonprofit that steers economic development across much of the 10-parish region, said this week that longtime president and CEO Michael Hecht will step out of day-to-day management and move into an emeritus role in 2027, with the board launching a national search for a new chief executive to run daily operations.
According to Axios, the announcement, laid out in a press release, outlines a phased handoff. Hecht will keep advising on "key projects" while a new president and CEO handles the daily grind. He told Axios he plans to start an economic development consulting firm next year and expects to stay involved in major, long-range efforts even as he backs away from routine management.
Hecht has led GNO Inc. for 18 years, a stretch that has put the group at the center of recruiting big-ticket projects, shaping workforce programs and pushing regional policy initiatives. GNO Inc. currently lists Hecht as president and CEO and lays out the organization's business development, public policy and workforce priorities.
Hecht's footprint and recent roles
In recent years Hecht has been tapped to coordinate cross-agency work tied to preparing New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX and to advise the city's infrastructure coordination committee, roles detailed by Axios. Those assignments help explain why the GNO Inc. job matters so much: the group has been front and center on economic wins while also running programs like the relaunch of the WorkNOLA job platform and publishing regional jobs analysis, efforts covered by Biz New Orleans.
What the board search could mean
Local coverage suggests the next CEO will need to juggle large, multi-agency projects, keep investors on board and maintain workforce pipelines through the transition. A recent report highlighting GNO Inc.'s nearly $20 billion win streak and deep pipeline of initiatives underscores how much is already in motion. The roster of regional business leaders who will steer the search is laid out on the board page at GNO Inc..
The press materials cited in coverage did not spell out a firm timetable beyond saying the board will "begin" the search, and GNO Inc. says Hecht will continue advising on long-term projects while the transition plays out. With regional stakes that stretch from logistics and energy to workforce programs, whoever the board taps next will have a lot of half-built plans to carry across the finish line.
