A 58-year-old Cedar Ridge man died Tuesday afternoon after his vehicle careened off State Route 174 and smashed into a large tree on the southbound side of the highway just south of Peardale Road. The violent collision drew a multi-agency response, and the driver was rushed to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The crash was reported at about 3:57 p.m., according to CBS Sacramento, which cited the California Highway Patrol’s Grass Valley office. A preliminary investigation found the vehicle had been traveling at a high rate of speed before it left the roadway and struck the tree. Authorities have not released the driver's name as the investigation continues.
CHP response and safety context
The California Highway Patrol's Grass Valley area, which patrols State Routes including 174, is handling the investigation, according to the CHP Grass Valley office. Local officers have recently run targeted enforcement periods focused on speeding along corridors such as SR 174 in an effort to reduce fatal collisions.
That enforcement push was covered by The Mountain Messenger, which cited CHP officials warning that excessive speed sharply increases the odds that a single mistake on these roads will turn deadly.
Tree assessed; road reopened
Following Tuesday's crash, authorities closed southbound Highway 174 between Peardale Road and You Bet Road while Caltrans sent in an arborist crew to examine a tree that was believed to be at risk of falling onto the roadway. After evaluating the site, crews determined the tree did not need to be removed and the highway was reopened, CBS Sacramento reported.
Cleanup crews also removed debris from the scene before normal traffic resumed along the corridor.
Investigation ongoing
CHP investigators say the cause of the crash remains under investigation and are asking anyone with information, photos or video to contact the Grass Valley office. Contact information for the local CHP office, including its address and phone number, is available on the agency's website CHP Grass Valley. Officials said they will provide updates as the probe advances.
The collision is a stark reminder of the hazards on rural foothill roads, where high speeds, tight curves and roadside trees can make a single lapse deadly. Local agencies continue to urge drivers to slow down and use extra caution on SR 174.
