A Saturday evening on a Southwest Houston freeway took a terrifying turn when a man allegedly handed a 3-year-old child to a stranger standing on the road, then drove off with a woman and left the toddler behind, according to police.
The encounter unfolded near the 6600 block of West Sam Houston Parkway, where a blue Honda Accord pulled up beside a woman who was already in the roadway. Witnesses told officers the man passed the child to someone nearby before grabbing the woman, forcing her into the car, and speeding away.
How HPD says it unfolded
According to ABC13 Houston, a witness reported asking the man if they could watch the child. The man agreed, the witness told police, and then immediately grabbed the woman, pulled her into the Honda, and took off.
Officers soon located the blue Honda and tried to pull it over. Police say the driver refused to stop, triggering a short pursuit that came to an end in the 7800 block of Bellaire. The suspect allegedly bailed out of the vehicle and ran, but officers say he was later found and arrested after a struggle with an officer.
Charges and state law
Authorities have charged the man with evading arrest and endangering a child, offenses that can bring felony-level penalties in Texas. The conduct described, including leaving a young child without reasonable care, falls under Texas Penal Code §22.041. Fleeing from a peace officer in a vehicle is covered by Texas Penal Code §38.04, which allows for enhanced penalties when a vehicle is used in an attempted escape.
Arrest and court status
Houston police say the pursuit wrapped up on Bellaire, where the suspect was taken into custody following a brief foot chase and a reported struggle with an officer. ABC13 Houston reports that court records identify the suspect as Rodolfo Vedey-Alvarez, who is being held without bail.
The woman who left in the car with the man was later found walking back toward W. Sam Houston Parkway. Police say she declined to provide a statement.
What remains unclear
Officials have not released the child’s relationship to the man or additional details about the child’s condition. Houston police investigators continue to review the incident as the case moves through the courts and prosecutors consider whether to pursue any further charges.
