A 53-year-old Hugo man was killed Saturday evening when his vehicle left a rural Choctaw County road and rolled, according to state troopers. The single-vehicle wreck happened on East 2030 Road near North 4220 Road and left the driver dead at the scene.
Rollover Near Hugo Turns Deadly
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol identified the driver as 53-year-old Rodney Ward of Hugo. Troopers said Ward was headed west on East 2030 Road just west of North 4220 Road when his vehicle went off the roadway, hit a fence and rolled, according to KXII. Ward was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators have not released the make or model of the vehicle. The crash remains under investigation.
Seat Belts And Rural-Road Risk
Troopers told reporters Ward was not wearing a seat belt, a detail that often raises the odds of a fatal outcome in rollover crashes. The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office's 2025 seat-belt observation study put statewide use at about 85.3% and at 82.9% on local and rural roads, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that properly worn seat belts can cut the risk of fatal injury by roughly 45–60% depending on vehicle type. Safety officials point to numbers like these when urging drivers to buckle up, even on familiar rural routes.
Investigation Ongoing
The highway patrol said investigators are reviewing evidence from the scene and the vehicle to determine what triggered the crash. KXII reported that troopers have not yet identified a probable cause and that the collision remains under investigation. Officials have not indicated when a full report will be released.
Ward was a Hugo resident; Hugo is the county seat of Choctaw County in southeastern Oklahoma. Authorities have not released any information on possible additional occupants or a coroner's report as the investigation continues.
