A Sunday morning ride turned deadly on Interstate 10 east of Vidor when a blown tire on a three-wheeled motorcycle set off a crash that killed two people, according to state troopers. The wreck happened shortly before 11 a.m., and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger later died at a nearby hospital. Eastbound lanes were temporarily shut down while first responders handled the crash and worked to clear the roadway.
Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Shana Clark told KJAS the vehicle was a Honda three-wheeled motorcycle that had been towing a small trailer when the rear tire suffered a blowout. Troopers identified the driver as a 71-year-old man from Duson, Louisiana, and said the passenger was a 69-year-old woman who died later at a hospital. Authorities have withheld their names until next of kin can be formally notified.
Where It Happened
The crash took place in the eastbound lanes of I-10 near Claiborne Park in Vidor. The park sits along the interstate at 14810 IH-10, according to The Record, and is a familiar spot for county events. Troopers and county crews closed lanes while they investigated the scene, then reopened the roadway later in the day.
Why a Blowout Can Be Deadly
When a tire fails at highway speeds, especially on a motorcycle or three-wheeled vehicle, the sudden loss of stability can make a crash almost impossible to avoid. The Texas Department of Transportation has reported that motorcyclist deaths have increased in recent years and is working on safety steps such as improved guardrail design to limit post-crash injuries. Officials also stress the importance of regular tire checks, conservative speeds when towing, and proper protective gear as key ways to reduce risk on interstate trips.
Troopers told KJAS the investigation remains active and that no additional details are being released for now. Authorities have not said whether any citations or charges might result from what they found at the scene. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
