A massive blaze tore through the Pallets N More recycling yard in Imlay City yesterday, sending thick columns of smoke over Lapeer County and pulling in fire crews from across the region in a large mutual-aid response. Flames fed on stacks of pallets and other recyclables as firefighters worked into the night. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
According to CBS News Detroit, 13 departments responded to the scene, and a special water task force from Huron County was deployed to help keep a steady flow on the fire lines. The blaze is under investigation.
Per the company's website, Pallets N More recycles wood pallets, cardboard, and plastic and lists a Shaw Road address in Imlay City. The type of material handled at the site helps explain why a pallet-yard fire can be so stubborn, with combustible stockpiles that generate sustained flames and heavy smoke.
Why Pallet Yards Burn Hot
Stacks of idle pallets create a severe fire condition. The National Fire Protection Association notes that closely piled pallets dry out and can let fires spread rapidly, often overwhelming sprinkler systems and requiring pre-wetting or abnormally large water supplies. That vulnerability helps explain why crews brought in additional water tenders and a specialized water task force for this response.
How Crews Fight It
Fighting yard fires is water-intensive and typically demands coordinated water-shuttle operations and mutual aid. Fire-service reporting and operational guides note that these task forces can deliver thousands of gallons per minute when managed effectively. Those high-capacity shuttle operations are why officials sometimes call in county water task forces and multiple neighboring departments to maintain a steady supply feeding attack lines and overhaul crews.
The blaze remained under investigation, and officials had not immediately released details about the cause or the extent of damage, CBS News Detroit reported. This story is developing.
