A 2-year-old who was reported missing Monday in Jacksonville’s Jamestown neighborhood was found in a nearby body of water and rushed to a hospital, according to officials. Family members and neighbors had been combing the area around Elmar Road before the child was located. The child’s condition was still unknown as of the latest update.
As reported by News4JAX, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating how the toddler ended up in the water. Responders found the child after relatives and neighbors canvassed the Jamestown area. The sheriff’s office had not released any additional details by the time of publication.
Why this matters
Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1 to 4 nationwide, and public health officials warn that even brief lapses in supervision can be deadly. A recent Vital Signs report highlights rising drowning rates and urges layers of protection, including physical barriers, swim lessons and constant adult supervision, according to the CDC.
Local concern over retention ponds
The incident comes as Jacksonville residents are already pressing for stronger safety measures around retention ponds, following a toddler’s drowning that led one family to demand changes last month, as reported by News4JAX. Advocates have urged apartment managers and developers to restore natural banks or add fencing to restrict access to open water. At least one wrongful death lawsuit tied to a pond drowning in recent years has raised questions about property upkeep and legal liability.
Where to get help
The City of Jacksonville offers free and low cost swim lessons through JaxParks’ SPLASH Squad and posts family water safety guidance on its website, including learn to swim vouchers and pool schedules, per the City of Jacksonville. Officials also urge caregivers to learn CPR, use secure barriers around any water on private property and call 911 immediately when a child is missing.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is ongoing and that more information will be released when it is available. We will update this story as officials provide new details.
