Today started off more gray than golden in San Diego, with a thick marine layer parked over the region, mostly cloudy skies, and temperatures sitting near 64°F at the airport. Patchy drizzle lingered along the immediate coast in the early hours, but those clouds are expected to thin into partly sunny skies this afternoon, with highs near 70°F.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
While the coast shakes off the gloom, the backcountry will be dealing with a different kind of drama. Strong west to southwest winds are set to ramp up this afternoon across the desert slopes and through the mountain passes, with gusts of 30 to 45 mph expected in favored canyon and desert spots and even stronger gusts possible in the passes. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the San Diego County deserts into the evening, and the San Gorgonio Pass advisory runs into early Monday. Forecasters urge residents to secure loose outdoor items and be ready for sudden gusts on exposed bridges and canyon roads, according to the National Weather Service San Diego.
Foggy Mornings, Brighter Afternoons
The marine layer, currently about 3,500 feet deep, will keep mornings on the gray side with a chance of patchy drizzle near the coast before skies clear inland by late morning to early afternoon. High temperatures are expected to top out around 70°F at the shoreline and in the low 70s inland through midweek, keeping conditions a few degrees below normal for this time of year.
What To Do Today
Drivers may want to build in a little extra time for the morning commute, since patchy low visibility and damp roadways could slow things down. Boaters and anyone launching small craft near the coast should also stay cautious as breezy conditions develop through the day.
