A 24-year-old man was stabbed Friday evening in the Bannister Street area of Kalihi, sending him to the hospital and rattling neighbors along one of the neighborhood’s busier stretches just after sundown. Police say they have a description of the suspect and are asking the public to help track him down as the investigation rolls on.
Police release suspect description
District 5 patrol officers responded at about 6:25 p.m., according to a post by the Honolulu Police Department. The department says the 24-year-old victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, and that witnesses described the suspect as a Micronesian male wearing a yellow sweater, roughly 6 feet tall with a medium build, black hair and a medium complexion. Police say the suspect took off from the scene in a vehicle, and detectives are now chasing down leads.
Kalihi's recent violence and response
The stabbing comes as Kalihi has seen several serious assaults in recent months, feeding long-standing worries about street violence in the area. A separate April incident on Waterhouse Street left a man in serious condition, as detailed in a Kalihi street stabbing report. Local leaders and police have repeatedly urged residents to share tips with investigators and to steer clear of confronting suspected offenders themselves.
The Honolulu Police Department is asking anyone with information to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300, according to the department’s post. Detectives say the investigation is ongoing and are encouraging witnesses to come forward with tips, photos or video that could help identify the suspect.
