A Cherokee County jury has convicted a Jonesboro man in a violent attack on his intimate partner inside a Canton hotel room, finding him guilty of family-violence aggravated assault and false imprisonment in a case that left the victim fleeing half-dressed and bleeding to the front desk for help.
Verdict and what's next
According to a news release from the Office of the District Attorney for the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit, jurors on June 11 found 37-year-old Desmond Jamal Camp guilty of family-violence aggravated assault and false imprisonment. He was acquitted on two additional aggravated assault counts and one family-violence battery charge.
Sentencing is set for June 23 in Cherokee County Superior Court, where Camp now faces a potential prison term under Georgia's sentencing laws.
Prosecutors' account
Per FOX 5 Atlanta, the charges grew out of an April 30, 2025 incident at the Quality Inn in Canton. Prosecutors said Camp tried to remove the victim's clothing, then grabbed a large knife and held it to her throat. The confrontation left cuts on her hand and blood on the bed, according to the state's account.
The woman ultimately bolted from the room, ran to the front desk and sought help. Hotel staff called 911, setting the case in motion.
At trial, the state presented physical evidence that included the victim's cut shirt and shorts, the knife, photographs from the scene, a recording of the 911 call and body-worn camera footage. Jurors deliberated for about six hours before returning the guilty verdicts on the two counts.
Court docket and charges
Court calendars list the case as 25CR0733-JD, with initial counts that included multiple aggravated assault charges, false imprisonment and a family-violence battery charge, according to the Cherokee County District Attorney's Office. The case was investigated by the Canton Police Department and prosecuted by the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit.
