A weekend outing at Electric Beach in Nānākuli turned violent on Saturday when, according to police, a 64-year-old man walked into a large gathering armed with a knife. Two people were hurt: a man who was taken to a nearby hospital and a woman who paramedics treated at the scene.
Police detail the arrest
In a Facebook post, the Honolulu Police Department said District 8 patrol officers responded to Electric Beach after reports that a 64-year-old man had approached a large gathering while carrying a knife. Officers arrested the man on suspicion of attempted murder in the second degree.
According to HPD, a 54-year-old male victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment, while a 49-year-old woman who was also injured was treated at the scene.
Where it happened
The confrontation unfolded at Electric Beach - locally known as Kahe Point Beach Park - on Oʻahu’s leeward coast near the Kahe power plant. The shoreline along Farrington Highway is a well-known snorkeling and diving spot, with guides and listings noting that warm water outflows from the plant draw in marine life and helped inspire the “Electric Beach” nickname, according to TripAdvisor.
What the law says
HPD said the case will be conferred with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney as investigators work to firm up potential charges. Under Hawaii law, attempted murder in the second degree is a felony that can carry a possible life sentence with the chance of parole, although the actual sentence depends on the final charges and any enhancements, according to legal summaries and state case law cited by FindLaw.
Context on recent beach violence
The Electric Beach arrest lands as HPD is already juggling several high-profile assault cases around Oʻahu. Earlier this month, a North Shore mob beating left a lifeguard and a 15-year-old badly injured, an incident that has stirred public outrage and fresh worries about shoreline safety, as reported by Hawaii News Now. Residents have been increasingly vocal about trouble at busy beach spots, particularly on the west side.
