A late-night pursuit in East Knox County turned deadly Friday when a high-speed chase ended in an officer-involved shooting that left the suspect dead and deputies uninjured, according to authorities. The chase came to a stop around 10:25 p.m. in the 7800 block of Kodak Road, where deputies began lifesaving measures, including CPR, before the person was pronounced dead. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called in to sort out what happened.
What the sheriff's office reported
According to WVLT, a Knox County deputy tried to make a traffic stop when the driver took off, triggering a chase that stretched to roughly 30 minutes before ending on Kodak Road. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office said there was “an encounter in which shots were fired,” after which deputies immediately began providing aid at the scene, including CPR. The individual later died, and no deputies were reported injured.
State probe underway
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has opened an independent review, a standard move in officer-involved shootings in the state. Special agents will gather evidence, interview those involved and then turn their findings over to the district attorney, who decides whether any criminal charges are warranted. As noted by the TBI, updates in similar cases are posted to the agency’s online newsroom when new information can be released.
What comes next
Sheriff’s officials have not yet released the suspect’s name or explained what led to the initial traffic stop. Any potential criminal or administrative decisions will hinge on the TBI’s findings and the review by the 6th Judicial District Attorney General. WVLT first reported the early details, and officials say more information will be shared as the investigation allows.
