A Saturday outing on Lake Lanier ended in tragedy when a 21‑year‑old man, identified by officials as Terrell Shelton of Pendergrass, was found dead late Saturday after disappearing while swimming with friends near Robinson Park in Gainesville. Investigators said the group had been swimming toward a nearby island when they looked back and could no longer see him. An overnight search ended with the recovery of his body.
Search and recovery
According to Atlanta News First, the Hall County Sheriff's Office received a call about a possible drowning at approximately 2:40 p.m., and first responders searched the area with dive teams and marine units into the evening. Search operations were suspended around 9 p.m., and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources later said the body was located just before 11:30 p.m. in roughly 14 feet of water. The cause of death remains under investigation, authorities said.
What officials reported
The Hall County Sheriff's Office told investigators that Shelton was swimming with friends toward a nearby island when he disappeared and did not resurface, Atlanta Journal‑Constitution reports. Georgia Department of Natural Resources game wardens located and recovered the body late Saturday using a remotely operated vehicle, officials said.
Lanier's recent toll
State records show this is the seventh drowning at Lake Lanier so far in 2026, according to board minutes from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and agency leaders say they are stepping up outreach. In its 2025 annual boating statistics, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources reported that Lanier recorded six drownings last year and led the state's major reservoirs in drownings, boating incidents and injuries; the same report lists 75 boating-under-the-influence charges at Lanier in 2025. DNR leaders flagged campaigns such as "Belts and Buoys" as part of broader safety efforts to promote life-jacket use and safer boating practices.
Pattern and safety
Local coverage has tracked other fatal incidents at Lanier this spring, including an April drowning reported in coverage of a deadly fishing trip, a reminder of how quickly outings can turn tragic. Safety advocates and officials repeatedly urge life-jacket use, sober boat operation and caution around islands, drop-offs and crowded coves.
Investigators with the Hall County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia DNR said the death remains under investigation, and the medical examiner will determine the official cause, according to Atlanta Journal‑Constitution. Officials reminded lake users to take precautions as the busy summer season begins.
