Mija Barbecue, the family-run Texan barbecue spot in Cedar Hill, is calling it quits after seven years, with its final day of service set for June 27. Owners Ryan and Bailey Siegler say a painful combo of rising beef and grocery costs and a steep drop in customers has forced the decision, closing a neighborhood favorite known for brisket tacos, barbacoa and Mexican-influenced smoked meats.

The shutdown news went out in a social media post earlier this month, and the Sieglers later told local reporters that business has thinned out noticeably since March. Ryan described a "very sharp" decline in customers on top of supply costs they simply could not absorb, according to MySA.
How the restaurant grew from pop-ups to a house on Belt Line
As D Magazine recounted, Mija Barbecue started as weekend pop-ups in early 2019 before graduating to a permanent home in a converted 1938 house near the town square. The Sieglers opened their brick-and-mortar at 406 W. Belt Line Road in 2024, after building out the old house with help from the surrounding community.

The Sieglers wrote that they wanted a controlled closing so the business would be remembered well, and they asked regulars to come by for one last meal before the pit goes cold. Their post, reported by Chron, also thanked the community for helping make this dream possible.

The USDA Economic Research Service Food Price Outlook shows beef and veal prices climbing more than 3 percent in recent monthly figures. For small barbecue shops that rely on premium brisket and similar cuts, that kind of jump can squeeze already-tight margins.
