A Saturday night drive on the Eastex Freeway turned tragic when a woman was struck and killed near 14835 Eastex Fwy in northeast Houston, according to authorities. Police said a vehicle exiting from the freeway's main lanes to the frontage road hit the pedestrian while she was in an active lane of traffic. Emergency crews pronounced her dead at the scene.
Investigators said the crash happened about 8:54 p.m. on June 20 and that the driver stayed at the location and cooperated with officers, according to Click2Houston. Officers reported no signs of impairment during the initial investigation. The Harris County medical examiner's office is working to identify the victim.
HPD Probes Fatal Exit Crash Amid Earlier Eastex Deaths
The Houston Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Division is leading the investigation into the deadly crash. The Eastex corridor has already seen multiple fatal collisions this year. HPD documented a June 5 crash in the 7400 block and a February 5 crash in the 1000 block of the Eastex Freeway in recent news releases, both described as fatal and still under investigation by the department, according to an HPD release.
