A late-night drive in northeast Oklahoma City turned deadly early Monday when a vehicle struck two people near I-35 and N.E. 36th Street, right by the Lincoln Park Golf Course. The collision happened around 1:30 a.m., and police say the driver is now in custody on a complaint of driving under the influence.
When Oklahoma City emergency crews arrived, they found two pedestrians lying in the roadway. Investigators say one person died at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials told KOKH that the driver was taken into custody on a DUI complaint. So far, authorities have not released the names of the victims or explained what they believe led up to the crash.
Pedestrian safety trends
The deadly collision lands against a grim national backdrop. The Governors Highway Safety Association estimates that drivers struck and killed 7,148 pedestrians in the United States in 2024, with hit-and-run incidents and nighttime crashes often making investigations tougher to piece together. Those trends help explain why early-morning wrecks on busy corridors can be especially challenging for crash teams trying to reconstruct what happened.
According to the GHSA, hit-and-run crashes account for a significant share of pedestrian deaths, which in turn complicates both investigations and eventual prosecutions.
Investigation ongoing
Investigators have released few other details about this case, including whether additional charges beyond the DUI complaint might be pursued. The identities of the victims also remain under wraps while the probe continues. Police say the investigation is active and that more information will be shared as it becomes available.
For now, the early account from local TV remains the main public version of events, and reporters are watching for updates from the Oklahoma City Police Department as the case develops, as reported by KOKH.
