A late-night drive on one of Bloomfield Township’s busiest stretches turned deadly last Saturday when a driver allegedly blew through a red light at Big Beaver Road and Woodward Avenue, triggering a three-car crash that killed a 30-year-old Farmington man.
Police said the collision happened around 11:40 p.m. after a motorist ran a red light and slammed into a Toyota Camry and a third vehicle. The Camry’s driver, a 30-year-old man from Farmington, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CBS Detroit. The person in the other struck vehicle escaped injury.
The driver accused of running the light was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition on Sunday, police told CBS Detroit. Investigators suspect drugs may have played a role in the crash.
Busy Corridor, Known Crash Hot Spot
Woodward Avenue is no sleepy suburban road. South of Big Beaver, daily traffic volumes approach 70,000 vehicles, according to the Bloomfield Township Master Plan. That same document notes that intersections along the Woodward corridor rank among the township’s highest for crashes, which underscores how running a light at Big Beaver can have deadly consequences.
Investigation Ongoing
Bloomfield Township police told CBS Detroit that the crash is still under investigation. Authorities have not identified the hospitalized driver and have not announced any charges.
Detectives are reviewing witness statements, searching for any available video and awaiting toxicology results before deciding on possible criminal charges or citations.
Anyone with information or footage related to the crash is urged to contact the Bloomfield Township Police Department at 248-433-7755, or call 911 in an emergency. Officials say additional details will be released as the investigation moves forward.
