A late-night drive on a rural Warren County road ended in tragedy Friday when a 21-year-old passenger was killed and two others were injured in a single-car crash, authorities say. A Kia Optima went off County Farm Road north of Depping Drive around 11:30 p.m. and slammed into a tree. Emergency crews pronounced the passenger dead at the scene, and the driver and another occupant were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries.
What the state patrol's report says
According to KMOV, which cites a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, the Kia left the roadway just north of Depping Drive before hitting a tree at about 11:30 p.m. Friday. KMOV reports that the 21-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and another passenger were transported to area hospitals with injuries. Investigators from the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the crash site.
Why run-off-road crashes are often deadly
Crashes involving a vehicle leaving the roadway and colliding with fixed objects like trees frequently turn serious or fatal. Trees do not absorb much crash energy, so the impact forces stay concentrated on a small section of the vehicle. A recent National Academies report and other traffic-safety research note that run-off-road collisions account for a large share of fatal single-vehicle crashes. Factors such as inattention, fatigue and speed are often cited as contributors in these kinds of wrecks.
Investigation and local context
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation, and its online crash-reporting system lists the basic details of the incident. Local law enforcement and emergency crews closed off the area during the overnight response while troopers documented the scene. Investigators are expected to add any contributing factors to the official report after further analysis. We will update this story if the patrol or county officials release additional information.
