Two quick phone grabs in the Loop were enough for Chicago police to sound the alarm on downtown sidewalks. After a pair of cellphone robberies earlier this month that detectives believe may be connected, officers are warning pedestrians to keep a tighter grip on their devices as they move through the heart of the city. In both cases, groups approached people on the street and forcibly took their phones, and police say no arrests have been announced. Investigators described the suspects as young men in dark clothing and are asking anyone who saw something to speak up.
What police say
According to a Chicago Police Department community alert reported by FOX 32 Chicago, one robbery happened around 6 p.m. on May 3 in the 100 to 200 block of North State Street. The other was reported around 5 p.m. on May 6 in the first block of East Jackson Boulevard. In each incident, the victims’ phones were taken.
Detectives say they are looking for a group of three to four suspects described as Black men between 19 and 25 years old who were wearing black hoodies and black pants. Police say that description is consistent across both cases, and that they have not announced any arrests tied to the incidents.
How to report tips
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Bureau of Detectives, Area Three, at (312) 744-8263 or to submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com using reference number P26-3-020. That reference number is included in local reporting by CBS Chicago.
Detectives say that even small details from bystanders or nearby businesses, such as a partial plate number or a brief security clip, can help link suspects to other reports. They stress that if something seemed off at the time, it is worth calling in.
Why the Loop is often targeted
Busy downtown strips packed with shoppers, diners and tourists have long been prime territory for quick-grab theft crews. Crowds, distracted walkers and constant foot traffic create just enough chaos for a team to move in, bump or distract a target and disappear with a phone before the victim fully realizes what happened. Past community alerts and local coverage have documented similar patterns, with groups approaching victims on sidewalks or near CTA stations, jostling them and grabbing phones or headphones, as ABC7 Chicago reported. That track record is a big part of why police keep pushing for quick tips and camera footage from downtown businesses.
How to protect your phone
Police suggest keeping your phone out of sight when you are walking downtown. A zipped pocket or a crossbody bag is far safer than a hand, open tote or back pocket. Staying aware of your surroundings and going easy on headphone use while walking can reduce the chance that someone sneaks up on you.
It also helps to back up your device regularly to the cloud so a stolen phone does not wipe out your contacts and photos. If you see a grab-and-run, officers say not to chase or confront suspects. Instead, note what you can, such as clothing and direction of travel, then call police.
Investigators say they are canvassing downtown businesses and reviewing surveillance footage as they follow up on leads. Anyone with information about the May 3 or May 6 robberies is urged to contact Area Three detectives at the number above or submit an anonymous online tip using reference P26-3-020.
