A normally quiet Mesa neighborhood near Dobson Road and Dartmouth Street was on edge last Wednesday after police say a man threatened a neighbor with a bow and arrow, triggering a SWAT response and an eventual arrest. Neighbors were briefly moved out of the immediate area while officers secured the scene and took the suspect into custody, according to authorities.
Police response
According to FOX 10 Phoenix, Mesa Police were called just after 7 p.m. to a dispute near Dobson Road and Dartmouth Street after a caller reported being threatened with a bow and arrow. Officers were initially unable to contact the suspect, and the department's SWAT team was brought in. The team later took 44-year-old Shawn Megran into custody. Police say he was medically cleared before being booked into jail.
Bow-and-arrow calls in the Valley
Incidents involving bows or arrows are not common in the Valley, but they do happen. ABC15 reported a 2017 Mesa case in which a neighbor allegedly aimed a loaded bow at others. Earlier this year, AZFamily covered a February arrest after a man with bows and arrows entered a school playground in northern Arizona.
What’s next
Authorities have not said what started the dispute or whether prosecutors will move forward with specific charges against Megran. FOX 10 Phoenix reports it has reached out to Mesa Police for more information, and the department may release additional details on any charges or court dates if and when they become available.
