On Wednesday night in east Mesa, a routine shift turned into a sprint through smoke when officers rushed a burning home near 78th Street and Baseline Road and pulled two people out to safety, according to police. The blaze started as a car fire, then spread to an RV and parts of the house. Both occupants made it out without injury, while several officers ended up needing medical care for smoke inhalation.
Immediate rescue
According to FOX 10 Phoenix, officers arrived to find a vehicle already on fire, with flames pushing toward an RV and the residence. Mesa police said that "without hesitation, officers ran toward the home," forcing their way into the smoke-filled interior as conditions rapidly worsened. Inside, they located a woman and a man and guided them outside before the situation could turn much uglier. The department credited the officers' quick decisions with preventing further injury.
Officers treated for smoke inhalation
Several officers were treated at the scene, then transported to a hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. Mesa police did not immediately release the officers' names. Officials said the fire is currently considered "not suspicious" as investigators work to pin down what started the blaze. City representatives did not have additional details on the officers' conditions at the time of the report.
Local context
It has been a busy year for fire crews in Mesa. In January, an apartment fire near Dobson and Baseline sent six people to burn centers, as reported by ABC15. In incidents like Wednesday night's house fire, firefighters and police typically work side by side on rescues, securing the area, and launching origin-and-cause investigations. Mesa Fire & Medical handles structure fire investigations in the city and often coordinates with other Valley agencies when incidents escalate.
What investigators say
Mesa police said the investigation into the Wednesday night fire is still underway. Officials plan to release updates as more information comes in and emphasized that, at this stage, investigators do not believe the blaze is tied to criminal activity. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Mesa Police Department's non-emergency line.
