Metal is the last mix-in anyone wants in their ice cream, and that is exactly what state officials are warning about at one of Uptown Minneapolis' best-known scoop shops. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) issued a consumer advisory Monday after a routine inspection suggested some Milkjam Creamery products may contain metal fragments. The shop on Lyndale Avenue closed Friday and has said it plans to reopen Tuesday, June 2.
What’s affected
According to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the advisory covers two non-dairy pints sold at retail and two flavors served in the store.
The affected pints are:
- Black Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert (pint; lot code 052662-26)
- Toasted Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert (pint; lot code 052763-27)
In the shop, the advisory applies to scoops of the flavors Zahra and Ridin’ Duuuurty that were served between May 26 and May 28.
The MDA said the possible metal contamination was identified during a routine inspection. Neither the agency nor Milkjam has received any reports of illness connected to the affected products, according to the advisory.
What Milkjam says
Milkjam Creamery posted on its website that it will reopen on Tuesday, June 2 and apologized to customers for the interruption in service.
Local coverage reported that the shop closed on Friday after “unexpected equipment issues” were flagged on the company’s social channels, as reported by KARE 11.
What to do if you bought one
The MDA is urging anyone who has one of the affected pints at home to throw it away or return it to the place of purchase. Consumers who think they may have eaten contaminated product and have health concerns are advised to contact a health care provider.
People with questions about the advisory can call the Minnesota Department of Agriculture at 651-201-6300, the agency said.
How common is this?
Foreign objects showing up in ice cream are unusual but not unheard of. Earlier this month, Straus Family Creamery voluntarily recalled select production runs after discovering damaged equipment that could have introduced metal fragments into its products. The company posted details of the recall, and Straus Family Creamery documented that action publicly.
Uptown staple
Milkjam, located at 2743 Lyndale Ave. S., has been an Uptown favorite since it opened in 2016, serving inventive flavors in the shop and distributing pints to local co-ops and restaurants.
The current advisory is a reminder of how one piece of misbehaving equipment can ripple through a small producer’s entire operation. Customers who picked up Milkjam pints at other retailers are urged to check the lot codes before digging in, local coverage notes.
For a sense of how firmly Milkjam is planted in the neighborhood’s dessert culture, the local scoop scene has highlighted the creamery’s role among Minneapolis ice cream standouts.
