Brown & Gibbs, a Bay View sports bar that opened in March 2025, has gone dark after the Milwaukee Common Council moved to block renewal of the tavern's liquor license. Owner Julio Maldonado missed two consecutive license renewal hearings and did not file written objections before the vote. The corner spot at 182 E. Lincoln Ave., which replaced Satchmo’s, had its liquor service suspended in February when the license lapsed, while Montes Kitchen kept turning out tacos and birria.
According to Urban Milwaukee, the Common Council voted unanimously Tuesday to uphold the Licenses Committee's recommendation to deny renewal, effectively shutting the business down. Ald. Alex Brower made the motion for nonrenewal after committee members cited Maldonado's no-shows and lack of communication. No one on the council objected, the outlet reported.
City minutes show missed hearings and an expired license
City of Milwaukee meeting records show that the renewal application for Revival Bay View LLC, the entity behind Brown & Gibbs, expired Feb. 26, 2026, and that Maldonado failed to appear at the Licenses Committee's June 9 hearing. The committee then voted 5-0 to recommend nonrenewal because of a second nonappearance, sending that recommendation to the Common Council, per the City of Milwaukee meeting minutes.
Why the city refused renewal
Urban Milwaukee reported that the bar's liquor service had already been on ice since February after the license lapsed, and that a request for a provisional license was rejected because of outstanding fines and state holds. Maldonado told the committee at an April hearing that catastrophic flooding early in the bar's life had put the business under serious financial strain. The outlet also noted that state tax records show two filings against Revival Bay View LLC for unpaid taxes. "Our hands are tied," Assistant City Attorney Travis Gresham told the committee, according to the reporting.
Legal context
Under Milwaukee's licensing process, repeated failures to appear and unresolved holds can push the Licenses Committee to recommend nonrenewal, a move the Common Council can adopt. That administrative path is reflected in the City of Milwaukee minutes and in council motions, which serve as the city's formal tool for enforcing licensing rules and addressing public safety concerns. Officials framed the decision as an enforcement of licensing requirements rather than a criminal penalty.
Space history and the neighborhood
The corner space at 182 E. Lincoln Ave. has seen brisk turnover in recent years. Satchmo’s opened there after a yearlong renovation before giving way to Brown & Gibbs, which marketed itself as a sports-centric bar paired with Montes Kitchen’s food, according to OnMilwaukee. With Brown & Gibbs now closed, Bay View loses another late-night option, and neighbors are left to speculate who might take a swing at the space next.
What comes next
Because the Common Council upheld the committee's recommendation, Brown & Gibbs cannot sell alcohol at the site unless outstanding fines and tax holds are cleared and a new license is approved. For now, the business has ceased operations. Any comeback will hinge on whether Maldonado can settle those balances and reapply for a license, or whether a new operator steps in to pursue fresh licensing for the corner bar.
