Who Will Determine Cause
The Phoenix Fire Department maintains a public monthly drowning report that logs calls to ponds, canals and pools across the city, a reminder of how often crews are dispatched to water-related emergencies (Phoenix Fire Department). In cases like Thursday's recovery, the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner is responsible for conducting the forensic examination and determining the medical cause and manner of death (Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner). With the case now in police hands, detectives will move forward with their side of the investigation while the medical examiner completes its work.
