A late-night Lyft trip near Neville Island took a violent turn Sunday when, police say, a passenger stabbed his driver near the Interstate 79 exit during a fight inside the car. The driver was rushed to a hospital and was last reported in stable condition. The passenger, identified by troopers as 31-year-old Saul Baxin, ran from the scene on foot and was struck by a passing car before officers caught up with him in the Coraopolis Road area.
What Police Say
Pennsylvania State Police report that troopers were called shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday for an "assault incident" near the Neville Island exit of I-79. When they arrived, they found the Lyft driver with a stab wound to the right side of his neck.
Investigators say the passenger took off on foot toward Coraopolis Road, where he was hit by a passing vehicle and later taken into custody. Court records show Baxin is awaiting arraignment on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, and criminal mischief, according to CBS Pittsburgh.

The stabbing lands in a region that is still reckoning with high-profile violence against rideshare drivers, including the 2022 killing of Uber driver Christina Spicuzza. That case ended with a guilty verdict announced by the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office, and it sparked renewed calls from drivers and advocates for tougher protections and better in-app safety tools.
Prosecutors in the Spicuzza case highlighted how heavily the trial relied on digital evidence and dashcam video, according to the DA's release, a reminder that for many drivers, their own cameras have become an unofficial last line of defense.

Lyft markets its safety features under the slogan "Safety never takes a backseat" and points to tools it says are built into the app. Those include measures like in-app emergency options and background checks for riders and drivers.
Drivers and safety advocates, however, have long argued that app features alone do not erase the risks of working behind the wheel at all hours, and they continue to push for stronger on-the-job protections and faster responses when rides are flagged as high risk.
Baxin remains in custody and is awaiting arraignment. Investigators have not released any information on a possible motive, and the case remains under active investigation. State Police and local prosecutors are expected to handle the upcoming pretrial steps, according to CBS Pittsburgh.
