A nighttime ride through downtown Grayslake turned deadly Tuesday when a woman on a bicycle was struck and killed by a freight train near the Grayslake Metra station, authorities said. Emergency crews pronounced her dead at the scene, and investigators worked into the night trying to piece together what happened.
According to ABC7 Chicago, Metra said a Canadian National freight train hit the bicyclist shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday near the downtown Grayslake station. The outlet reported that Metra Police and local first responders responded to the scene and that officials have not yet released the victim's name or the circumstances leading up to the collision.
Why This Is A Broader Safety Issue
Pedestrians and trespassers make up the majority of rail-related deaths, according to the Federal Railroad Administration, which tracks risks around tracks and crossings. A recent GAO report found that crashes at grade crossings remain a leading cause of railroad fatalities and called for expanded federal guidance focused on pedestrian safety projects.
Where It Happened
The collision occurred in the immediate area of the Lake Street station in downtown Grayslake, near Lake Street and St. Paul Street, which serves Metra’s Milwaukee District North line, according to the Village of Grayslake's commuter information page. That downtown stretch is a busy crossing zone for walkers, cyclists and commuters heading to and from Pace buses.
Investigation And What Officials Are Asking
Metra Police and local law enforcement are investigating, and authorities are asking anyone who saw the crash or has video footage to come forward. Metra lists emergency and police contact information for rail incidents, including the Metra Police non-emergency line. Riders and witnesses with urgent information can also contact 911.
This story will be updated as officials release more details. For now, the cause of the fatal collision remains under investigation.
