A woman found badly beaten and unresponsive inside a north Columbus home early yesterday has died, and police say a 44-year-old man is now facing a murder charge in connection with her death.
Court filings identify the victim as Shauda Starks and place the incident in the 900 block of Cameron Crossing Drive. Officers detained Travis Milton at the scene and charged him with murder, according to Columbus police, who say the investigation is still active as detectives continue collecting evidence.
Court records reviewed by 10TV state that Milton called for help and was detained after telling officers he had cleaned blood from the victim. The affidavit says he later changed his story about where he and Starks had been drinking that night. According to those records, officers reported a strong odor of bleach inside the residence, and surveillance video reportedly showed the pair had not been inside the bar Milton first named. An autopsy described bruising and swelling to Starks' face and eyes, lacerations on the back of her head and shoulders, and “multiple internal injuries” that investigators say caused her death.
