A woman was killed Monday night after a vehicle struck her on North Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale, turning an ordinary commute into a fatal scene along the busy corridor. The crash happened in the 1700 block around 8:30 p.m., and rescue crews rushed the woman to Broward General Hospital as a trauma alert. Fort Lauderdale police said the driver stayed at the scene, and homicide detectives have opened an investigation.
What Happened
According to Local 10, the collision occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Federal Highway. Witnesses told the station the woman was dressed in all black when she was hit by a Hummer that showed visible damage along its passenger side. The outlet reported that she was transported to Broward General Hospital as a trauma alert and was pronounced dead on arrival.
Witness Accounts
One witness, Luke Atkins, told Local 10 that “the Hummer started braking a split second before the hit.” Other witnesses pointed out the passenger-side damage on the vehicle and said the driver did not leave the scene. Investigators were seen canvassing nearby businesses and properties for surveillance footage and looking for additional witnesses who might help piece together the moments before impact.
Statewide Context
Florida continues to sit uncomfortably high on the list of states with the most pedestrian deaths. NHTSA reports 771 pedestrian fatalities in Florida in 2023, accounting for roughly 23% of the state’s traffic deaths. Safety officials and advocacy groups have repeatedly cited factors such as nighttime crashes, the growing number of light trucks and SUVs on the road, and stretches of roadway without sidewalks or adequate lighting as contributors to the grim statistics.
Investigation
Fort Lauderdale police said homicide detectives are leading the investigation and have not yet released the victim’s name. Broward Health Medical Center, where she was taken, is the county’s largest hospital and serves as its Level I trauma center. Detectives are asking anyone with information or video from the area to contact the Fort Lauderdale Police Department as they work to determine exactly what happened.
Legal Note
When homicide detectives are brought in on a traffic fatality, investigators typically handle the case as a potential criminal matter while they sort out the sequence of events and any possible culpability. Prosecutors will decide whether to file charges only after police complete their investigation and submit their findings to the state attorney’s office.
