A two-vehicle crash in North Philadelphia on Sunday sent one car up onto the front steps of a building at North 5th and Luzerne Streets, tangling traffic and drawing a heavy response from firefighters and medics. Witnesses reported a loud impact and shattered glass as crews swarmed the corner. City officials had not yet confirmed whether anyone was injured as workers cleared the wreckage.
What Happened At 5th And Luzerne
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, the crash involved two vehicles and left one car lodged against the building's stoop while the other sat nearby with its airbags deployed. NBC10 reported that images from the scene showed emergency crews on the sidewalk and debris scattered across the steps. The station said investigators were still working to determine how the crash happened and whether anyone had been hurt.
Not The Only Car-To-Building Crash This Spring
The Luzerne Street wreck is the latest in a string of incidents this spring where vehicles have plowed into Philadelphia buildings. In April, a driver intentionally crashed into the lobby of the Philadelphia Police 2nd District building in Rhawnhurst, injuring five people, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. WHYY's coverage of that crash noted police called it an "absolute deliberate act" and said federal partners were assisting the investigation.
Neighbors' Safety Concerns
Earlier the same month, a car jumping the curb and slamming into a North Philadelphia apartment building displaced 10 residents and prompted Red Cross assistance, CBS Philadelphia reported. Neighbors in that case told reporters they were shaken and called for traffic-calming measures on busy corridors where speeding is a known problem.
