An 18-year-old driver is now facing serious felony counts after a late-night crash in Northglenn left his 18-year-old passenger dead and his car jammed against a brick house. The collision ruptured a natural gas line, forced evacuations on the block, and ended with officers arresting the teen at the scene.
Prosecutors with the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office have charged Angelo Arias with two felonies: vehicular homicide - DUI and vehicular homicide for reckless driving, tied to the May 28 crash. The filing, entered as case 2026CR1489, shows a preliminary hearing set for June 23.
Northglenn police say it all started just before midnight on May 28, when an officer spotted a vehicle driving erratically near Washington Street and East 112th Avenue. Officers tried to pull the car over. The driver briefly stopped in the 10500 block of Clarkson Street, then took off and, minutes later, slammed into a house in the 10400 block of Clarkson Street. The impact ruptured a gas line and triggered temporary evacuations in the area, according to Denver7.
Scene And Affidavit Details
An arrest affidavit reviewed by The Denver Post states investigators saw no evidence of braking at the crash scene. One officer estimated the car was doing about 60 mph in a 25 mph zone as it sped away. The vehicle hit a gas meter and ended up pinned against the home’s brick exterior.
Court records identify the passenger as 18-year-old Paige Mahone. She was found breathing but unconscious and later died at a hospital, according to the affidavit. Investigators reported finding marijuana paraphernalia and an empty shooter bottle in the vehicle, and say Arias admitted to taking several shots of liquor and smoking marijuana before getting behind the wheel.
What Police Said At The Scene
Officers at the scene reported smelling alcohol on Arias and booked him on suspicion of impairment and related offenses, according to police. As a safety precaution, police and utility crews evacuated nearby homes while the gas line was shut off, then allowed residents back once the area was cleared, per local coverage from CBS Colorado.
Court Schedule And Charges
The district attorney’s filing lists the charges as felony vehicular homicide - DUI (a Class 3 felony) and vehicular homicide for reckless driving (a Class 4 felony). Prosecutors note that the filing is a formal accusation, and Arias is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The case is assigned in Adams County District Court under number 2026CR1489, with a preliminary hearing on the calendar for June 23.
Investigators are still piecing together what happened in the final moments before the crash. Anyone with information or video is asked to contact Detective Brummel at 303-450-8857 or [email protected], officials said, according to Denver7. Authorities say eyewitness accounts or footage could help clarify how the deadly collision unfolded.
