A Sunday night traffic stop on Oak Park's east side ended in deadly gunfire when an officer shot and killed a driver after what officials describe as a struggle over a firearm near Harrison Street and Austin Boulevard. Officers performed first aid at the scene before the man was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later, officials said. The Illinois State Police are now leading the investigation.
Oak Park police identified the driver as 38-year-old Christian Wallace. According to the department, an officer discovered a gun while patting Wallace down during the stop. Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office said Wallace and the officer then fought for control of the weapon, and Wallace briefly regained control before the officer fired. As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, the officer then shot Wallace.
Officers continued life-saving efforts at the scene before Wallace was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. He was pronounced dead around 10 p.m., officials said.

The police department posted a brief statement about the stop on its social channels and did not immediately release the officer's name or say whether body-camera footage exists. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, investigators will continue their review.
