A quiet stretch near Somerset Place and West Fairfield Avenue in Oklahoma City briefly turned chaotic after a reported robbery Tuesday that sparked a short police pursuit and ended with a crash in a nearby neighborhood. Two people were taken into custody at the scene, while a third person ran off on foot and remains at-large, according to police. Authorities reported no injuries, and the crash briefly tied up nearby streets as officers processed the scene. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
What police say
Police told News 9 the robbery happened near Somerset Place and W. Fairfield Avenue. The suspects left in a vehicle that already had a third person inside, and officers followed in what they described as a slow pursuit through a nearby neighborhood. The vehicle eventually crashed, and two people were arrested at the scene. The third person ran from the crash site and has not been found.
Investigators told News 9 they are looking for a suspect described as a Black teen, about 17 to 18 years old. The case remains active as officers continue to search for the person who fled.
Pursuit policy and national safety data
Court filings indicate the Oklahoma City Police Department adopted a more restrictive vehicle-pursuit policy in 2022 in an effort to reduce risks to bystanders and property, according to Justia. The local move fits into a broader national debate over when officers should chase fleeing suspects.
Research published in JAMA Network Open found that pursuit-related fatal crashes increased between 2009 and 2023 and were most likely to occur at night and on noninterstate roads. Experts say that even short, low-speed chases through residential areas can put uninvolved drivers and people on foot in harm’s way.
Investigation and next steps
Police have not released the names of the two people arrested or said whether any charges have been filed. Detectives are processing evidence from both the robbery scene and the crash site as they work to piece together what led up to the incident, according to News 9.
