A 43-year-old man has been arrested after police say he shot and killed a pregnant cow in Phoenix, north of Durban, in a case that has stunned local residents and animal-welfare advocates. The animal was found fatally wounded on Kiddsbrook Road in Brookdale after calls to emergency services on May 31, and local animal groups have condemned the killing as shocking and called for a serious, no-nonsense response.
According to The Post, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the 43-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with contravention of the Animals Protection Act. He has already appeared in Phoenix Magistrate’s Court, and The Post reported that the matter was adjourned until August.
How Police Say It Unfolded
Reaction Unit South Africa said its Phoenix operations centre started receiving multiple calls on the evening of May 31. Officers were dispatched to Kiddsbrook Road in Brookdale, where they found the cow dead. Residents told Reaction Unit officers they had seen a man driving in the area who stopped next to the animal, pulled out a firearm and shot it, Reaction Unit South Africa reported.
Animal-Welfare Groups Demand Accountability
Stray Paws founder Shabnam Baran described the arrest as a relief but stressed that it could not be the end of the story. She urged the courts to treat the case with full seriousness and called the killing “an act of profound cruelty,” as reported by The Post. The Durban & Coast SPCA has also confirmed that a docket is being compiled and that it is working with investigators on the case.
Broader Pattern In Phoenix
The shooting has landed in a community already on edge over a series of animal-abuse incidents in the Phoenix area, which have sparked protests and louder calls for tougher enforcement. In May, a pig known locally as “Nunu” was attacked and later found with a gunshot wound, an incident that prompted a march by animal activists, PrimeTime News reported.
Legal Context
Animal cruelty in South Africa is a criminal offence under the Animals Protection Act (Act 71 of 1962), which, as amended, allows magistrates to impose fines and prison terms for malicious or wilful acts of cruelty, according to the text of the law on the South African Government website. The Act also provides mechanisms for organisations such as the SPCA to compile dockets and assist prosecutions, per official documents.
What Happens Next
The suspect’s case is scheduled to return to Phoenix Magistrate’s Court in August. Reaction Unit South Africa officers say they are continuing to assist police in tracking down additional witnesses and evidence. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Phoenix SAPS or Reaction Unit South Africa, which told local outlets it had received multiple calls about the shooting.
