A one-year-old child is in an extremely critical fight for life after being pulled from a backyard swimming pool in Phoenix on Saturday, officials said. Relatives started CPR before firefighters arrived, and the child was rushed to a hospital.
Rescue and response
According to Arizona's Family, crews were called to a home near Bell Road and 56th Street, where family members had pulled the child from the pool and were already performing CPR when Phoenix Fire units got to the scene. The outlet reported the child was unconscious and not breathing at the time. Officials have not released the child's name or provided additional medical details.
How common these accidents are
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1 to 4, and most drownings in that age group happen in home swimming pools. Public health experts urge “layers of protection,” such as four-sided fencing that fully separates the pool from the house and yard, pool alarms, close and constant adult supervision, and formal swim lessons to lower the risk.
The American Red Cross encourages adults to learn CPR and for families to enroll children in age-appropriate swim lessons, while the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends pairing swim instruction with secure barriers and an undistracted caregiver stationed right at the water's edge. Both groups stress that swim skills alone do not replace supervision and physical separation from pools.
Valley context
Local reporting and state reviews indicate that years of outreach in Arizona have helped drive down toddler drownings, but safety advocates warn that progress is fragile. As help slash toddler drownings statewide reviews still found dozens of child drownings in 2024, and officials say concentrated prevention work, including swim lessons, CPR training and sturdy pool barriers, remains crucial.
Arizona's Family reports that the Phoenix incident is under investigation, and city officials have not said how the child accessed the pool. Hospital and city authorities have not released further updates. Hoodline will update this story if more information becomes available.
