A motorcyclist died Monday after a collision at the intersection of 19th Avenue and Grandview Road in Phoenix left him pinned beneath a vehicle, officials said. Fire crews managed to free the rider, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators temporarily shut down the intersection to document the wreckage, and authorities have not yet released the rider's identity while family members are being notified.
What responders reported
Officers and Phoenix Fire Department crews were called to the intersection and worked to pull the rider from under the vehicle. Phoenix police told 12News that the driver of the involved vehicle stayed at the scene while detectives collected evidence and began piecing together what led up to the crash. Traffic was diverted as crews cleared debris and investigators documented the area.
Crash context and city plans
Motorcyclists continue to account for a disproportionate share of Phoenix traffic deaths. Bikes made up about 15% of the city's fatal collisions in 2022, even though they represent a relatively small portion of total crashes, according to the City of Phoenix Traffic Collision Summary. The report identifies locations with frequent crashes and outlines engineering and education efforts aimed at reducing fatalities.
City planning records also show the northwest corner of 19th Avenue and Grandview Road has appeared in recent rezoning and roadway improvement filings that call for reconstruction and a traffic signal, according to a City of Phoenix planning memo.
Investigation ongoing
Phoenix police said the crash remains under investigation and no further details were released Monday, according to 12News. The department has not announced any arrests or charges related to the collision.
