What started as a weekend house party in Point Loma ended with a 15-year-old boy in the hospital, a concussion diagnosis, and a furious father calling for accountability after video surfaced of the teen being stomped on by a crowd of other kids.
Video Captures Poolside Beating At Elliott Street House Party
San Diego police were called to Elliott Street last Saturday after neighbors reported loud noise and then an assault at a crowded house party. According to ABC 10News, video received by the victim's family shows the 15-year-old being shoved into a backyard pool before being surrounded by other teens who begin punching and stomping him.
The boy's father says there were roughly 100 teenagers packed into the property that night. Witnesses have since given police the names of potential suspects, according to ABC 10News.
Father Calls Footage 'Numbing'
The victim's father, Brian, told ABC 10News that watching the clip of his son, Michael, being ambushed left him "numb" and that "my heart sunk" when he saw what happened.
He described what he saw as a prolonged attack, saying one teen stomped on his son's head for 10 to 15 seconds. Brian said detectives are now expected to meet with prosecutors to review the case and discuss possible charges, according to ABC 10News.
Teen Suffers Concussion, Needs Staples After Attack
Doctors at the hospital diagnosed the 15-year-old with a concussion and treated a head gash that required staples. His father says the boy also suffered bruising across his body.
Brian reports that his son is still shaken by the attack and is now undergoing follow-up care, while investigators continue to analyze the recording and interview witnesses about what happened at the party.
Recent Stabbings Add To Point Loma Safety Concerns
The beating comes on the heels of other violent incidents in the Point Loma area. On May 26, a 19-year-old was stabbed to death in a grocery store parking lot, as reported by Times of San Diego.
In a separate late May incident, a midnight stabbing at Midway Towne Center was covered by Hoodline, adding to local unease about youth violence and late-night trouble spots in the neighborhood.
Legal Context: 'Swarming' Attacks Draw Tougher Scrutiny
Attacks like the one captured on video in Point Loma are drawing tougher scrutiny in other states, especially when they involve a group swarming a single victim.
In Arizona, prosecutors recently recommended charges in a similar pool-party ambush case under statutes discussed as Preston's Law, according to AZFamily. In San Diego, local prosecutors will review the evidence in Michael's case and decide what charges, if any, to file.
Brian says he wants other parents to understand that this kind of violence can unfold at what looks like a typical teen party and is urging anyone who saw the attack to come forward. Police say witnesses have already identified possible suspects, and they are asking anyone with additional information to contact the San Diego Police Department.
